PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT - IMPORTANT DATES AND EVENTS-

OUTDOOR EDUCATION SUNDOWNER

Thank you to everyone who came to Little Creatures on August 20th for the second sundowner. Someone should've told Ralph it started at 5pm, not that we missed him, everyone was just wondering how his shoulder was!

As I had not met alot of members, it was fantastic to put faces to names, or email addresses. It was also great to see members bring partners, prac students and friends along. Like they say, the more the merrier.

Liam, next time please order a table INSIDE when it's 3 degrees outside, or make sure there are heaters at both ends of the table! (not just your end).

It was a great night, many of the world issues were half solved, and the next sundowner is already in the pipeline. Little Creatures is the venue of choice, so stay tuned for the date. Otherwise, Sunday night before the conference should be loads of fun camping. Make sure you are there.

Steve, I owe you a beer.

Mel

AN HONOURS THESIS RESEARCH REQUEST

help

A Social Work student from Flinders University (Adelaide) is researching the treatment and management of problem behaviours in adolescent females on wilderness adventure therapy based programs. It is anticipated this research will add to the limited body of knowledge around the frequency and type of female adolescent problem behaviours on wilderness adventure therapy programs.  This information will help inform future practice and program planning in the field of wilderness adventure therapy, in addition to highlighting areas for future research.

BOOK REVIEW - RIVER RESCUE 3RD EDITION

BY JASON ZAURS

River Rescue 3rd Edition – A Manual for Whitewater Safety
Les Bechdel & Slim Ray, 1997

In keeping with the paddling theme and with the rain that has seemed to come and then gone, it is timely to review an excellent resource on the subject of river rescue. The Avon Descent this year had records broken and many boats broken too! The Murray River has had plenty of water and a few of my colleagues paddled with much precision to run the Lower Murray at 3.2m. Many Outdoor Education teachers like to hold canoeing or kayaking expeditions as pert of their programmes but do you know what to do when things go wrong? Read more ...

BUSHFIRE AND WEATHER

Australia has a history of severe bushfires. Such tragedies as the Ash Wednesday fires of February 1983 (71 deaths in Victoria and South Australia), the Tasmanian fires of February 1967 (62 lives, more than 1400 houses and buildings lost) and the New South Wales bushfires of 1994, place bushfires high on the list of Australia's natural disasters.

This online slide presentation provides excellent information about fires and the Australian landscape and climate dealing with:

WE ARE THE WEATHER MAKERS

Tim Flannery’s book, “We are The Weather Makers” is a concise young adults version of his best selling book, ‘The Weather Makers’. It is an extremely powerful book and a great teaching tool about climate change.
Tim reminds us that we are all connected – from the Arctic to the Outback - by climate, and our climate is influenced by how we choose to live, how we use our fuels, our water and our land. We are the Weather Makers includes a glossary, information on ways to help the environment and facts, figures and recommendations. It also lists internet sites, reference books and brochures for further research.
Flannery has set up a website to accompany the book and there is a good schools resource section to support the book.
The activities on this site follow the five parts of We are the Weather Makers. These are:
• The Atmosphere
• One in Ten Thousand
• The Science of Prediction
• People in Greenhouses; and
• The Solution.

The book is structured so that it can be studied within an individual subject (such as Science, English or Geography), pooor across subject areas. Activities are broadly stated, allow for the demonstration of a wide range of skills and many are open ended.

FATHERING ADVENTURES
dad

My name is Darren Lewis from Townsville, North Queensland. I have lead men's small groups, men's weekend retreats, and spoken at numerous men's breakfasts, since 2000. I am pleased to advise you that we have now launched an initiative up this way called Fathering Adventures... www.fatheringadventures.com.au. Please take a little time to explore our website, we'd love to hear your feedback.

Our inaugural 5-night father-son adventure is being held from Saturday afternoon, September 27th, to Thursday morning, October 2nd, this year. The minimum age requirement for the "sons" is 14 years, and there is no upper age limit. We are limiting these 5-night adventures to a maximum of 12 father & son pairs. Once again, far more detail can be found at our website.

To become a father is not difficult, but to be a father is." Unknown
