Adventure Activity Standards

IMPORTANT NOTICE

The Outdoors WA Board has determined that the NOLRS registration requirements are to be deferred until February 2013 for all activity areas covered by the AAS.

The Western Australian Adventure Activity Standards (AAS) are the minimum standards for the conduct of group outdoor adventure activities as determined by industry experts.

The AAS are Industry Standards.

Each Standard has on its cover page its version number and publication date. Where a version is posted as version 1.0, for example, it means it is the first major published version. Where it is posted as version 1.1, 1.2... it means that there has been minor changes to the previously published version. Version 2.0 would be posted once a major review has been carried out.

Western Australian Adventure Activity Standards are available for the following outdoor adventure activities:

  • Canyoning

  • Abseiling

  • Artificial Climbing

  • Rock Climbing

  • Challenge Ropes Courses

  • Bushwalking

  • Snorkelling and Wildlife Swims

  • Recreational SCUBA Diving

  • Canoeing / Kayaking and Sea Kayaking

  • Rafting

  • Mountain Biking

  • Trail Bike Touring

  • Horse Trail Riding

  • Four Wheel Driving

  • Caving

  • Surfing

Adventure Activity Standards benchmark the minimum industry requirements and responsibilities for organisations and leaders conducting outdoor adventure activities for commercial and non commercial groups where the participants are dependent upon the activity provider.

The development and implementation of the AAS allows the outdoor adventure industry to demonstrate its collective integrity and agreed standards. This, in turn will provide a measure of quality for the purposes of assisting

    1. Consumers of our services to make informed choices about the services they select
    2. Training organisations to produce graduates who understand and meet industry standards
    3. Media, insurance and legal scrutineers of our industry and its members, to understand what is acceptable practice and what is not
    4. The development of sustainable use practices that consider the specific natural and cultural heritage values of an area

The Adventure Activity Standards are aligned with the NTAP accreditation program and the National Outdoor Leader Registration Scheme.
